A short walk up the beach
The headland with the clay cliffs, and the dune everyone climbs at sunset.
Walk north along the sand and the beach narrows towards the headland, with the great dune rising behind it. The view back over the bay at the end of the day is the one people photograph.
The next bay along the coast
A Roman town on the beach, with its forum, theatre and fish-salting works still standing.
Baelo Claudia sits at the edge of Bolonia beach: a Roman town that made its money salting tuna and making garum, excavated and open to visit. The bay itself has its own great dune and a string of chiringuitos.
About 20 minutes by car
Whitewashed lanes, the castle, the port, and the two seas meeting at the end of it.
The old town keeps its walls, its castle and a tangle of lanes full of places to eat. Walk out along the causeway to the Isla de las Palomas and the Atlantic is on one side of you and the Mediterranean on the other.
Ferry from Tarifa port
Tangier is across the water, and the fast ferry goes from Tarifa itself.
On a clear morning you can see the Moroccan hills from the beach. The ferry from Tarifa port crosses to Tangier and back in a day — take your passport, and check the current timetable before you go.
From Tarifa port
Pilot whales, dolphins and, in season, orcas — fourteen kilometres of water between two continents.
Boats go out from Tarifa port to look for the resident pilot whales and dolphins, with sperm whales and orcas passing through at their own times of year. Reception can point you at the operators who work with the sightings groups.
